Fun Things to Do That Aren’t Hershey in PA

Central PA Tourism

Most people visiting Pennsylvania don’t consider the Central PA tourism options. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Hershey are the most common travel destinations. However, there are plenty of things to do in Central PA that aren’t Hershey Park. Central PA tourism features something for everyone.

Gettysburg, PA

This is a must-see destination if you’re a history buff. Central PA was the home of one of the most important battles of the Civil War. Visit iconic Gettysburg, PA. This is the location where the North won its most decisive battle of the war. Gettysburg is also known as the location of President Lincoln’s famous address, the speech in which he proclaimed all slaves to be free men. The historic elements of Gettysburg remain intact. This makes it the perfect Central PA tourism destination for anyone interested in our country’s history.

Columbia County

If your interested in experiencing the spooky side of Central PA, Columbia County is the place for you. It is a historic ghost town. Since a mine fire in 1962, the town has been all but abandoned. It’s even the least-populated municipality in Pennsylvania. The lack of residents paired with the troubling past makes it an ideal location for ghost hunting.

Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania

The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania is another popular Central PA location. It is not as large as the Grand Canyon, maxing out at 1,450 feet at its deepest. However, it still provides very picturesque views. Colton Point and Leonard Harrison state parks along the canyon offer breathtaking views. You can find the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania along Route 6. Anyone who wants to experience beautiful scenery should visit this attraction.

Yuengling Factory

Check out the Yuengling brewing factory for something a little more relaxing.  Located in Pottsville, PA, the Yuengling Brewing Factory was founded in 1829. This brewery’s claim to fame is that it is America’s oldest operating brewery. They have been producing their famous lager ever since their founding. This is a great place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing.

Lancaster Central Market

Located in the heart of Amish country, Lancaster Central Market offers delicious home-cooked food. Enjoy a homemade pie, chowder, or other comfort food on your trip to Lancaster. Additionally, the Amish in the area are known for their fine craftsmanship. Adding a new furniture or decorative piece to your home is a great way to remember your trip and support the local craftsmen.

Fallingwater

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater is our final Central PA tourism recommendation. This destination is located about 100 miles east of Pittsburgh and was the home to America’s most famous architect. Take a tour of this futuristic summer home built in the 1930s. The home’s layout and natural scenery will blow you away.

When people think about Central PA, Hershey Park is often the first thing that comes to mind. But Central PA has so much more to offer. There’s something for everyone in this culture and history-filled region. So check out our suggestions above, and happy travels!
