This post is one of a series dedicated to the three common kinds of servers: shared, semi-dedicated, and dedicated. Posts regarding semi-dedicate and dedicated servers are coming shortly. Shared hosting is one of several options that you have for your website. With shared hosting, multiple users can share a single server. This option provides lower cost to each individual user while still providing classic benefits. Additionally, you can offset much of the maintenance costs and more easily customize the size of your plan to fulfill the needs of your site.

1. Lower costs

The main selling point of shared hosting is the shared cost. Depending on the size of the server, you could be looking at a shockingly small bill for hosting. If you have a small website and you’re not dealing with millions of hits per month (yet), a shared hosting plan could be an easy way to get your business online. These days, it can be a catch-22 to put your business online. You need that web presence to gain customers, but without the traffic and sales that a website brings in, it’s just too expensive to have your own server. Shared hosting cuts that out and gives you the time and flexibility you need.

2. Standardized access through control panels

If you aren’t planning on managing your server, then shared hosting services are designed with you in mind. For example, on a shared hosting plan no one is allowed access to the entire server. This means, a standardized control panel is needed to give you easy access.  You don’t have to be an IT wizard to use cPanel or another comparable server. While it’s possible to set this up on your own server, it’s great to have it come ready to go as well.

3. Not responsible for maintenance

When you have a dedicated server of your own, you’re responsible for all upgrades, maintenance, and so on. When you have a shared hosting solution, you’re not responsible for bearing the burden of paying for maintenance alone. You split the cost with the other users on your server. In some cases, this could be dozens. Even a large maintenance bill is reasonable when split that many ways.

4. Flexible service plans

When you have a server all your own, it’s tough to outgrow it. Moving to a larger server is more of a hassle than expanding your plan on a shared server. Shared hosting allows you to upgrade your plan whenever you need to, provided that there’s still room on the server. Flexibility is great for a growing business. You don’t have to pay for a lot of space you’re not using. On the other hand, you don’t have to let

5. Many benefits of other plans

Aside from all the other advantages of shared hosting, you also get many of the same perks that you do with other plans. You still have access to your own domain. Your businesses can set up multiple email addresses for important employees, and so on. You have control over the security features on your own site, and so forth. Coupled with the other advantages, shared hosting is a well-rounded solution for many businesses.

Shared hosting is a great solution for growing businesses. The features of your server come at a fraction of the cost. Couple that with flexibility, support, and standardized access and you have a winning combination.
